Global Flower Growers Face Unprecedented Climate Disruption as Weather Patterns Destabilize Production Worldwide

A Kenyan rose farmer checking Lake Naivasha at dawn in 2023 found water creeping onto land that had been dry for a decade, while a Dutch tulip grower the same season watched bulbs rot in fields that once reliably froze each winter. These scenes, repeated across six continents, illustrate a mounting crisis for an industry built on climatic stability that no longer exists.

Flowers represent weather made visible — their color, stem length, and bloom timing respond directly to temperature, light, and moisture. For millennia, growers interpreted those signals and adjusted accordingly. Over the past two decades, however, those signals have begun contradicting themselves, and the farmers supplying Valentine’s Day bouquets, wedding garlands, and festival decorations worldwide are the first to recognize when old rules no longer apply.

Water Volatility in East Africa’s Rift Valley

Lake Naivasha in Kenya, surrounded by more than 50 commercial rose farms that supply European markets within 48 hours of cutting, has experienced a dramatic reversal. After years of drought-driven shrinkage that forced growers to confront water consumption rates of seven to thirteen liters per stem, the lake began rising around 2015. Unusually heavy rainfall in the Aberdare mountain range has pushed water levels upward annually, surprising scientists and displacing thousands of residents.

“Some growers have already seen parts of their farms encroached by the rising lake waters,” said Lina Jamwa of the Kenya Flower Council, noting that production in affected areas has been disrupted. The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service has meanwhile identified the False Codling Moth as an emerging threat — a pest that “wasn’t there some years ago” but now requires new surveillance frameworks due to warming temperatures expanding its range.

Patrick Mbugua of Wildfire Flowers Kenya described compounding pressures: “We’ve seen increased disease pressure due to unusual weather patterns, sometimes we have excessive hot weather which sees a jump in the number of pests, and other times unusually low temperatures which increases fungal infections, reducing yields.”

Nine hundred miles north, Ethiopia’s Lake Ziway has followed the opposite trajectory, dropping roughly a meter over two decades with its surface area shrinking eight percent since 2000. Frank Ammerlaan, a second-generation Dutch rose grower who established operations there in 2006, acknowledged that “climate-wise, growing roses is not ideal, even impossible in many places” — a reminder that Ethiopia’s advantage was always tied to specific, finite local conditions.

Temperature Extremes Threaten South American Production

Colombia’s flower industry, which supplies approximately 75 percent of U.S. flower imports, has been hit by both ends of the temperature spectrum. A severe cold snap in 2010, weeks before the Valentine’s Day harvest that represents roughly 12 percent of annual sales, forced growers to spray water over rose beds in a desperate attempt to release latent heat as ice formed. Significant production was lost. “If you don’t do well in Valentine’s it’s a lost year,” said Fernando Arenas of the flower company El Redil.

The 2024 El Niño cycle brought the opposite problem: record-high temperatures and clear skies pushed roses to bloom earlier than intended, disrupting carefully timed harvest schedules. “El Niño has definitely arrived with clear blue skies and high-temperature records across Colombia,” said Elkin Farfán, a planning manager at Phytotech. “It is a challenging time for the industry, and many exporters are struggling to keep afloat.”

Dutch Bulb Fields Drowning in Wet Winters

In the Netherlands, where tulip cultivation has defined agricultural landscapes for generations, Arjan Smit has watched his family’s business, started by his grandfather in 1940, grapple with fundamentally altered conditions. “Last year, it was just raining, raining, raining, and you can see the result,” he told a reporter in 2024, gesturing at muddy gaps where entire tulips drowned.

The numbers tell a stark story: the sector lost eight to nine percent of bulbs in the field last winter, with an additional four percent reduction in planting. “We have lost a minimum of thirteen percent of the new bulbs for next year,” Smit said. Annual temperatures in the Netherlands have risen approximately 2.3 degrees Celsius since 1901, reducing the frost days tulips require for proper development.

De Vroomen Garden Products, a major wholesale supplier, reported sourcing only about 80 percent of the tulip bulbs the market required in 2024, with the shortfall eventually reaching roughly 30 percent. The Keukenhof gardens have responded by planting substantially more bulbs simply to maintain expected visual density.

India’s Marigold Farmers Face ‘Wet Drought’

India’s marigold growers, who supply garlands for weddings, Dussehra, Diwali, and Onam, face a particularly cruel timing problem. In autumn 2025, unrelenting rain destroyed crops approaching festival-season harvest in Maharashtra’s Thane district. Standing water turned blooms black and rotten, while humidity spread a fungal blight farmers call karpya rog.

“The flowers were just about to bloom when the rain came,” one grower reported. “Within a few hours, everything was destroyed. Now there’s no harvest, no market and no income.”

One farmer from Karmala described transporting four tons of flowers through knee-deep water to reach Pune by train at midnight, only to receive 50 rupees per kilogram. “People are not buying,” he said. “We appeal to the Chief Minister to declare a wet drought.” That phrase — combining the worst features of both flood and drought — captures the modern reality for growers worldwide: extreme conditions arriving outside predictable seasons, concentrated into destructive bursts.

California Wildfires and Japan’s Shifting Cherry Blossoms

California’s flower farms, concentrated near Carpinteria at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains, survived the December 2017 Thomas Fire largely intact. But the interruption to shipping proved costly for perishable products requiring continuous movement. “These aren’t crops that can just hang on trees and wait until this thing passes,” said Kasey Cronquist of the California Cut Flower Commission.

In Japan, the cherry blossom — sakura — has shifted its peak bloom date earlier by roughly two weeks since the 1820s, with some recent years registering the earliest dates in 1,200 years of recorded observation. “To me, the cherry blossom record really captures how extreme these changes are,” said Elizabeth Wolkovich of the University of British Columbia. Research projects that Somei-Yoshino cherry trees could stop flowering altogether at the southern limits of their current range under continued warming.

A Global Pattern of Fragility

What unites these stories is the particular vulnerability of flowers themselves. Unlike grain, they cannot be stored. Unlike livestock, they cannot be moved. And unlike almost any other commercial crop, their entire economic value depends on specific ceremonial windows — wedding dates, religious festivals, single retail holidays — that do not adjust when weather refuses to cooperate.

That unforgiving combination of biological fragility and calendar-bound demand makes the flower trade an unusually visible register of how fundamentally the climate that growers depend on has already changed — and an early warning system for an agricultural world that will increasingly face the same disruptions.
