Tears of Joy: Lost Giant Flower Rediscovered After 13-Year Hunt in Sumatra

SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, a former elementary school teacher dropped to his knees in the mud of a tiger-inhabited rainforest and wept. The cause of his tears: a single, blood-red flower the size of a dinner plate.

Septian “Deki” Andriki had spent 13 years tracking Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic, leafless bloom that had not been confirmed in the wild for more than a decade. The rediscovery, made alongside researchers from Oxford Botanic Garden and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), marks a major scientific milestone—and a stark reminder of the precarious existence of the world’s most bizarre plants.

A 23-Hour Trek to a Holy Grail

The breakthrough came after a local resident tipped off Andriki earlier in 2025. Together with Oxford botanist Chris Thorogood and BRIN researcher Joko Ridho Witono, he embarked on a nearly day-long hike through dense forest in Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra. When the team finally located the bud unfurling its white-speckled, crimson petals, Andriki was speechless.

“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later recalled. “I just cried.” A forest ranger initially feared Andriki had been possessed by spirits; Thorogood described himself as “the luckiest guy alive.”

The footage of a grown man sobbing before a flower went viral across Indonesian, British, and American outlets. But behind the emotional moment lies a serious conservation imperative.

The Strangest Flower on Earth

Rafflesia species are among nature’s most peculiar creations. Lacking leaves, stems, or roots, they live invisibly inside host vines for years, emerging only to bloom—sometimes spanning nearly a meter across—and emit a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies for pollination. Of the 42 recognized Rafflesia species, roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside any legally protected forest, leaving them vulnerable to logging and land conversion.

The 2025 rediscovery is part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford, involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The team is collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants to map the genus’s evolutionary relationships, hoping to understand why the flowers bloom so rarely and unpredictably in the wild.

A Global Machine of Discovery

The Sumatran find is the most photogenic example of a far larger enterprise. Across the world, botanists are racing to describe thousands of undocumented plant species—many of them already endangered.

At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, researchers discover and formally describe roughly 200 new plant species each year, accounting for about one in every ten new species named globally. In 2025, the Garden highlighted discoveries ranging from a Costa Rican cactus to a new daisy relative in Peru and a species honoring Bolivia’s bicentennial.

One find required two decades of patience. In the early 2000s, entomologist William Haber handed a cutting from an unusual cactus to retired curator Barry Hammel. It wasn’t until the plant finally flowered in Hammel’s Costa Rican yard that they confirmed a new species in the moonlight cactus genus Selenicereus—likely endangered.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Among the most striking: Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis (the genus that includes cultivated grapes), built around two threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores—only the third such subgenus recognized in nearly a century.

Discovery Close to Home

Not all finds require rainforest expeditions. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley noticed small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers sprouting between desert rocks. She uploaded photos to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering a chain of expert identifications that led to an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on Kauai inaccessible to humans. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, named Schiedea waiahuluensis—likely the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.

A Race Against ‘Dark Extinction’

These discoveries tell two stories at once. One is one of persistence—a 13-year hunt, a two-decade wait for a cactus to bloom, a chance snapshot from a volunteer. The other is sobering: many newly named plants are already among the rarest organisms on Earth, restricted to a single mountain range or cliff face, and already threatened by habitat loss.

“Naming a species is not merely an academic exercise—it is the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist at all,” botanists at both institutions argue. A plant without a name is a plant without a defense.

Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before they are formally recognized—a phenomenon known as “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
