From a single camellia shrub surviving in a London conservatory to a parasitic plant that cannot be grown from seed, some of Earth’s most extraordinary flowers are also its most threatened. Scientists and conservationists have identified dozens of flowering plant species teetering on the brink of extinction, with several already gone from their native habitats and surviving only in botanical gardens. Habitat destruction, illegal collection, and dependence on single pollinator species have pushed these plants to the edge—and the window to save them is narrowing.
How Scientists Measure Extinction Risk
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List classifies species along a seven-step scale: Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct. Thousands of plant species currently hold a critically endangered designation, and many carry an additional “possibly extinct” tag, meaning no confirmed wild sightings have occurred in years or decades.
A significant caveat shadows these rankings: the vast majority of flowering plants have never undergone formal assessment. The species profiled below represent only those we know enough about to quantify as endangered.
Middlemist’s Red: Two Plants Remain
Often called the world’s rarest flower, Camellia japonica ‘Middlemist’s Red’ is extinct in the wild and believed to survive as just two cultivated specimens. British nurseryman John Middlemist brought the vivid pink-red camellia from China to England in 1804. Since then, it has disappeared entirely from its native range. Today, the only known living plants grow in a conservatory at Chiswick House in London and a private garden in New Zealand. Every bloom represents one of the last of its kind.
Rafflesia: Giant Blooms, Fragile Existence
Rafflesia arnoldii produces the largest single flower on Earth, with some blooms exceeding one meter across. It emits a rotting-flesh odor to attract carrion flies for pollination. Entirely parasitic, it lives inside host vine tissue and only reveals itself during flowering, making conventional cultivation impossible.
A comprehensive international assessment found 25 of 42 known Rafflesia species critically endangered, 15 endangered, and 2 vulnerable. Roughly two-thirds of known populations sit outside any protected area, leaving the genus without formal conservation safety nets. Habitat destruction and illegal harvesting for supposed medicinal properties drive the decline.
Ghost Orchids: Invisible Until They Bloom
Two plants share the ghost orchid name. Dendrophylax lindenii, found in Florida and Cuba, lacks leaves entirely, its pale flowers seeming to float on nearly invisible aerial roots. Epipogium aphyllum, found across Europe and Asia, contains no chlorophyll and survives by parasitizing underground fungi, sometimes remaining unseen for years between appearances.
Both depend on hyper-specific fungal partners and, in Florida’s case, a single moth species for pollination—a fragile chain where breaking any link can silence a population permanently.
Blue Amaryllis: A Single Fire’s Devastation
Worsleya procera, a striking blue-lavender amaryllis relative, grows only on steep granite cliffs near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A 2008 wildfire destroyed much of the remaining wild population. Horticulturists at Kew Gardens have successfully propagated the species and preserved its seed in cold storage, providing an insurance policy against total loss.
White-Flowered Aloe: Kept Alive by Humans
Aloe albiflora, a small white-flowered succulent from southern Madagascar, has not been recorded in the wild since 1955. It survives only because botanic gardens worldwide have maintained cultivated specimens, sharing genetic material in the absence of any known wild population.
Taiwan Rhododendron: Down to a Handful
Rhododendron kanehirai disappeared from its native habitat along Taiwan’s Peishi River after severe flooding. For years, just two plants survived at Logan Botanic Garden in Scotland. Cuttings have since been distributed to other institutions, including Kew, with hopes of eventual reintroduction.
Cayman Sage: A 40-Year Disappearance
Salvia caymanensis, native only to Grand Cayman, was believed extinct for 40 years between 1967 and 2007. A public reward campaign led to its rediscovery, demonstrating that extinction labels are not always final—but often depend on luck as much as effort.
Parrot’s Beak: Common in Gardens, Gone in the Wild
Lotus berthelotii, native to the Canary Islands, produces curved crimson-orange flowers resembling a bird’s beak. Wild populations have collapsed due to habitat loss and the disappearance of its native pollinator, likely a now-extinct sunbird. The plant is widely sold as an ornamental, creating a paradox: common in garden centers, functionally absent from its native landscape.
Slipper Orchids: Victims of Collector Demand
Roughly 79% of all slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum spp.) are threatened, making them the most trafficked group of endangered flowers worldwide. Newly discovered species have been stripped from the wild within months of scientific description, before protections could be implemented. Every species is listed under CITES Appendix I, the strictest international trade protection, yet enforcement struggles to keep pace.
Corpse Flower: Fame in Captivity
Amorphophallus titanum, native to Sumatra’s rainforests, produces one of the largest flower clusters in the plant kingdom and blooms only every several years. Deforestation has steadily eroded its range. Its irregular blooming cycle makes wild recovery slow, but blooms in botanical gardens draw crowds and headlines, generating funding and attention for conservation.
Shared Vulnerabilities

Ex situ propagation has brought species like Aloe albiflora and Rhododendron kanehirai back from total loss. International trade regulation through CITES targets high-demand species, though enforcement gaps remain. Protected area expansion remains critical for species like Rafflesia, while public engagement—from reward campaigns to crowd-drawing corpse flower blooms—continues to generate funding and awareness.
For these rare flowers, the difference between survival and extinction increasingly depends on human intervention, sustained investment, and the determination to protect the last fragments of habitat that remain.
